Over STRAAT

De straat is meer dan een stoep, gevels of kruispunt. Het is een bruisende plek met veel betekenislagen. Tegelijk dorpsplein en stadsader, ontmoetingsplek én anonieme tussenruimte. Een podium voor protest. Een speelplaats voor jong geweld. Een toevluchtsoord voor subculturen.

Van maart tot augustus 2026 brengt de Warande met STRAAT een energiek, eigenzinnig programma dat zich uitstrekt van onze zalen tot in de stad zelf. Geen klassiek festival, maar een avontuurlijke verkenning van de straat in al haar vormen: rauw, poëtisch, confronterend en verbindend. 

STRAAT laat disciplines in elkaar overvloeien. Theater, dans en muziek ontmoeten beeldende kunst, interventies, film en subcultuur. Van een skatepark in de Schouwburg tot een stadswandeling op de grens van fictie en realiteit. Van gameboybeats in de Kuub tot een straatfeest dat Turnhout in beweging zet.

Wat leeft er op straat? Wie maakt er de dienst uit – en wie verstoort de orde? Samen met kunstenaars, buurtbewoners, jongeren, partners en toevallige passanten bieden we een frisse blik op de straat als plek
van vrijheid, expressie en verbinding. Soms klein, intiem en tijdelijk. Soms uitgesproken,
luid en zichtbaar. Altijd in beweging. Net als de straat zelf. 

Programmator Sarah Bracke over STRAAT: "We willen de straat naar binnen trekken met voorstellingen als ‘Skatepark’ en ‘Burning City’. Tegelijk willen we ook zelf de straat claimen. Dat doen we onder andere met de expo 'STOEP', de performance ‘Dit lijkt een beetje op een cactus’ en een bruisend straatfeest in juni. Zo kleuren we de straat en schrijven we samen mee aan haar histoires."
